CANADIAN FOOD GUIDE SUMMARY

Plant-Based Proteins:

  • Should be favoured over animal proteins

  • Increases intake of dietary fibre

  • Lowers risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Lower certain kinds of cholesterol

Environment:

  • Food choices impact environment

  • Plant-based foods help conserve soil, water, and air

  • 31 billion dollars of food is wasted every year in Canada and needs to be decreased on all levels of food production and consumption

Sugar:

  • Diets should have low amounts of sugar, salt, and saturated fat

  • Regularly eating highly-processed foods should be avoided

  • Labels in Canada will now have to distinguish what kind of sugar is being used in packaged products

Caloric Intake:

  • Is not a set number and varies dependent upon several factors like genetics and amount of physical activity

  • Kids should be doing 60 mins of exercise a day

  • Adults should do 150 mins of exercise a week

Miscellaneous:

  • Water should be our beverage of choice

  • To increase our variety of nutritional foods, turn to our culture for ingredients and cooking methods

  • If we create nutritional eating patterns, our children are more likely to adopt the same.
